Number Stories teaches students to unpack and solve complex, unfamiliar problems to develop mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills, explain their thinking and construct mathematical arguments, build an understanding of grade-level conjectures and concepts, and apply concepts, strategies, and models learned in math and mini-lessons to novel contexts.
The Robertson Center is excited to publish curricular resources from Success Academy’s elementary school math program! We’re excited to share them with educators and caregivers to use with students in the classroom or at home. Number Stories is a lesson structure in the Success Academy conceptual math curriculum. It is based on the Cognitively Guided Instruction model. Number Stories teach students to unpack and solve complex, unfamiliar problems to develop mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills, explain their thinking and construct mathematical arguments, build an understanding of grade-level conjectures and concepts, and apply concepts, strategies, and models learned in math and mini-lessons to novel contexts.
In Grades K-2, students work to solve a problem during Number Stories. The Number Stories block happens 3-4 times per week for approximately 40 minutes.
Each grade level has a Teacher’s Version document and a Student’s Version template. In order to use them, you can open the links in Google Docs and click File → Download → PDF and save them locally to your computer. Alternatively, you can open them, click File → Make a copy and then save them in your Google Drive and edit them as you see fit.
We hope these resources are helpful to you. If you have any questions about using them, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected].
