Success Academy Reading Culture means scholars fall in love with reading, habitually read and identify as readers. It is clear that you are creating the Success Academy Reading Culture when:

Scholars

  • Pick books for a reason.
  • Are emotionally engaged in their books.
  • Have plans for future books to read.
  • Read inside and outside of school.

Teachers

  • Have their own reading life.
  • Protect reading time & space in their class as sacred.
  • Recommend books based on knowledge of students and libraries.
  • Treat student book choice as personal, independent reading as important.

In order to evaluate a school’s reading culture, identify evidence of the standard within:

  • Independent Reading
  • Book Shopping
  • Reader’s Notebooks
  • Book Pass Routine
  • Conversations with Scholars & Teachers
    • What are you reading and why did you choose it?
    • What book do you want to read next and why?

To help teachers identify student preferences and guide scholars toward books they will love, use these grade-aligned tools during your initial reading check-ins and book shopping routines:
