Moving Scholars as Readers and Writers: Scoring Feedback

Scoring Feedback

The number one thing that you can do to invest scholars in their grades is to regularly score and give feedback on their classwork and homework.

Without regular feedback on their work, scholars will simply not grow as readers and writers. More important, if scholars are not receiving regular scores and feedback on their work, they will quickly become disinvested in turning in work altogether.

As a Middle School Literature teacher, you are responsible for scoring and giving feedback on the following assignments each week:

  • Literature:
    • Scholars’ Response to Literature Essays and Exit Tickets

When giving feedback, great teachers…

  • Knowledgeably diagnose what is holding the scholar back
  • Prioritize what is most important (IDEAS front and center!)
  • Are assertive and directive about what needs to change and how to approach changing it (feedback is actionable)
  • Contextualize their feedback
  • Give praise only when it is earned
