ES Literacy Introductory Guide Guided Reading

Watch Guided Reading in Action!

Guided Reading at Success

We read with scholars in small groups of 6–8, using books that are just a bit too hard for kids to read independently. If the scholars were able to read these books without struggle, there would be no need to coach them within a small group! In these groups, scholars meet with peers reading at the same level, guided by the teacher.

By coaching scholars in these groups, we give kids the tools to ultimately tackle books at this level on their own. As a result, they are able to rapidly ascend reading levels and gain confidence as a reader and thinker.

What is the Structure of a Guided Reading Lesson?

Launch the Book — 3–5 minutes

  • Engage scholars by briefly introducing the text.
  • Highlight words that are essential to understanding the main idea.
  • If appropriate, highlight a critical or confusing part.
  • Assign a thinking job appropriate to the text’s genre.

Read the Book and Coach — 5–10 minutes (K–Gr1) / 10–15 minutes (Gr2–4)

  • Scholars read while you listen in and strategically coach.

Discuss the Book as a Group — 3–5 minutes

  • Bring kids back together for a discussion about the text.
  • Reinforce the main idea of the text in your questioning.
