This video demonstrates how a teacher can foster a scholar’s excitement and engagement through a brief reading conference:

  • Connecting to Personal Interests: The teacher builds engagement by asking why the scholar chose the book, allowing them to explain how seeing the movie sparked their interest in the story.
  • Validating Genre Exploration: The teacher acknowledges the student’s growth as a reader by identifying that this series represents their “first dive into fantasy”.
  • Enthusiastic and Active Listening: When the student vividly describes an early battle scene, the teacher reacts with genuine surprise and interest, remarking on how “action-packed” the book is so early on.
  • Building Future Anticipation: The teacher encourages the scholar to maintain their momentum by expressing curiosity about future plot developments and asking the student to “keep me posted” as they continue reading.
